SHORT HISTORY OF MACRAME/ KRATKA ZGODOVINA MAKRAMEJA

If you are reading this you are probably thinking about trying macrame yourself or you want to learn more about this beautiful craft. While younger generations are falling in love with it due to it’s popularity on social media, older generations still remember how popular this textile technique was during 70’s. Macrame is making a big comeback and with it’s contemporary updates it looks more cool and trendy than ever. But don’t be satisfied just with those facts and read further because the history of macrame is actually quite fascinating.

The first macrame makers were 13th century Arab Artisans, who were using decorative knots to secure the loose ends on woven textiles. The craft slowly spread throughout Europe, first to Spain, Italy and France.

We can not talk about Macrame without mentioning the sailors, who started combining the knots to create more complex patterns to pass the time during their long days at the sea. Travelling all over the world they would sell their knotted goods and introduce macrame to new lands.

In the 17th century Queen Mary II of England was known to be very fond of the craft and in the Victorian era macrame was a very popular hobby among women and widely presented in peoples homes. What followed, was a big decline of popularity of macrame but it never disappeared completely.

In the 70’s macrame had a wild comeback with feminist movement. Everything you could imagine was made with macrame, there have been even reports of macrame Chistmas tree.

Today macrame is a must for those who love bohemian decor and natural materials and for craft enthusiasts from all around the world. It’s very exciting to see how this textile technique keeps developing through combining its traditional and contemporary forms.

KRATKA ZGODOVINA MAKRAMEJA
